Monodactylus argenteus, commonly known as the Silver moony, is a medium sized brackish water fish. Their base colour is bright silver and their body is shaped like a freshwater angelfish. As juveniles they've two black vertical bars, one through the eye and one just behind the gill. Their dorsal and caudal fins are yellow and the anal fin has a broad black rim which sometimes continues all the way to the gill stripe. As adults the bars faint and the black in the anal fin usually gets more intens at the tip and also develops in the tip of the dorsal fin.
As juveniles they live solitary or in small groups in tidal creeks and all the way into freshwater streams. As adults they move more to towards the sea and form schools in mangrove estuaries and bays. They feed on plankton and detritus, so make sure to feed them a varied diet and include a good quality algae pellet or flake!
Fish offered are all acclimatised to salt water.
