Ornate Wrasse, Halichoeres ornatissimus

A fantastic reef safe wrasse that also does a useful job eating common pests such as Flatworms, Bristleworms, and Nudibranchs. Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups. Can be kept with most other small Halichoeres species. All individuals start life at females and grow to around 2”-3”, the largest Halichoeres wrasse in the aquarium then changes into a male and may reach as much as 4”, sometimes even a little more. Suitable for tanks 100 litres or larger. The Ornate Wrasse has red, green and white striped pattern and the two ocelli in the dorsal fin in juveniles and females. A 50 gallon or larger aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, a 2-3 inch sandy bottom to hide under if frightened, and other peaceful wrasses, including its own species, is an acceptable environment. 

It will eat fireworms and pyramidellid snails, protecting corals and clams. In addition, it may eat feather dusters, wild shrimp, tubeworms, and flatworms. It may also eat parasites off of tank mates. The Ornate Wrasse diet should include vitamin enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods along with a high quality marine flake and marine pellet food.
