The Blue Eyed or Longspine Cardinal, scientifically known as Apogon Leptacanthus, is a captivating marine fish known for its vibrant colors and distinctive blue eyes. This small, yet striking species adds a pop of color and activity to any saltwater aquarium. They typically grow to a size of 2-3 inches, making them an ideal choice for a variety of tank sizes. Native to the Western Pacific Ocean, the Blue Eyed Cardinal thrives in coral-rich areas, lagoons, and sheltered reefs. They prefer environments with plenty of hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat.

In captivity, they should be fed a variety of high-quality marine foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine flakes or pellets designed for carnivorous fish. Frequent, small feedings are recommended to ensure optimal health and coloration. This species is known for its peaceful demeanor, making it a suitable companion for many other reef-safe fish and invertebrates. Ideal tank mates include other small, peaceful fish such as clownfish, gobies, and dartfish. It is advisable to avoid housing them with large, aggressive species that may intimidate or harm these delicate cardinals. The Blue Eyed Cardinal is a notably peaceful and sociable fish, often found in small groups in the wild. In the aquarium, they can be kept singly or in groups, though it’s important to introduce all individuals simultaneously to prevent territorial disputes. Their peaceful nature makes them excellent candidates for community tanks.
